What is a Resentment? And 4 Ways to Move Through It
So what is a resentment exactly? A resentment is a feeling of bitterness, indignation, or anger as a result of someone else’e actions.
Examples of resentments may include (but are not limited to) feeling angry/wronged after a messy breakup, feeling hateful towards someone for bullying you for years, or feeling insulted by someone who decided to short you on cash.
Why it’s important to let go of resentments
As the above quote states, they’re poisonous for us. Holding on to hatred and perseverating on anger is not healthy. It’s okay to feel angry sometimes but to obsess over it is another story. Letting go of resentments can help you feel more free, happy, and unburdened. Forgiving someone else is mostly for us, after all, and contrary to popular belief.
What can you do if you have a resentment?
- Talk to a professional/trusted friend about it: This will help to process what’s happened
- Write about it: Write a letter to the person saying exactly how you feel and burn it. Journal and reflect on the experience.
- Make art about it: Self expression is so important for releasing pent up emotions
- Practice meditation: Try forgiveness focused/self compassion focused
