The Many Benefits of Vulnerability and How to Practice It

Being vulnerable helps you in a lot of ways. Below are some benefits of practicing vulnerability that I could think of:

  1. Helps you connect to others
  2. Helps you release internal pressure
  3. Helps you become more in touch with yourself
  4. Aids in communication
  5. Improves mental health
  6. Increases authentically

How to practice it:

Being vulnerable isn’t easy but here are some tips on how to practice it:

  1. When someone asks you how you are doing, tell them how you really feel.

Now of course there is a caveat with this and to all vulnerability practices. Practices vulnerability when it is appropriate. This means don’t open up to someone you don’t trust or who could use sensitive information against you.

  1. When someone upsets you, communicate with them about it in a calm, considerate, and open manner.

A big tip for this kind of communication is using “I” statements and focusing on how you feel and how what the person did affected you rather than playing a blame game and deflecting onto the other person. This kind of communication opens up the door for the other person to be more vulnerable, too.

  1. Journal your heart out.

While this type of vulnerability doesn’t involve another person, it’s you being vulnerable with the most important person in your life: you! Journaling increases self awareness and helps you get to the root of the issue.

Hope this quick and easy guide to vulnerability was helpful. Further resources include one of my favorite TED talks by Brene Brown about vulnerability that I would recommend anyone watch:
