The 5 Stages of Change: A Tool for Assessing Readiness

Change is a funny thing. It requires a level of honesty, open-mindedness, willingness, and acceptance. There’s usually a four step process (in no particular order) where it comes to change:

  1. We have to be honest that we have a problem and aware of it fully
  2. We have to be open to changing our habits
  3. Willingness is required to take action towards changing the habit
  4. We accept the problem and what it takes to change

There’s what’s called a 5 stages of change model in the mental health world. This model is used mostly with substance abusing clients to help them recognize where they are and move forward, but I believe that it can be used in mostly any habit changing conversations. Below are the 5 stages:

  1. Pre-contemplation: folks in this stage don’t recognize a problem and have no desire for change.
  2. Contemplation: people here are thinking about change and recognize a problem but still have ambivalence about doing anything about it.
  3. Preparation: this stage is marked by a firm decision to change and a formulation of a plan.
  4. Action: this stage includes making steps toward change.
  5. Maintenance: these folks have established a new routine and are maintaining it.

Now how can you use this information to help you?

Great question! Identifying what stage you’re in can offer some self awareness. If you’re in pre-contemplation have no fear! This exercise is not meant to cause self hatred. Meet yourself with kindness and get curious about why you’re in that stage.

Happy changing!
