5 Signs You’re Emotionally Regulated
So let’s start with defining what emotional regulation is first. To be emotionally regulated means that you’re able to feel the full gamut of emotions with minimal acting out and reaction. Nobody’s perfect so I’m never going to say never here but basically the majority of the time an emotionally regulated person is able to experience themselves without lashing out.
It’s important to be emotionally regulated for many reasons but the main reason being that it makes your life a whole heck of a lot easier. It’s more peaceful and serene to be able to feel your emotions and respond accordingly rather than self sabotage, lash out, act out, hurt yourself or others, etc. I view practicing emotional regulation as living an optimal life and thriving rather than surviving. And who doesn’t want that?
Now, the big question is: how do we achieve emotional regulation? Practice and patience and time, my friend. That’s been my experience at least. This could be a whole other article as far as I’m concerned but I’ll give you some pointers to land you in this direction:
- Feel your feelings and get curious about what they’re telling you. If you’re feeling angry, what’s underneath that? (See my article about the anger iceberg) If you’re sad, how can you be kind to yourself?
- Sit with yourself during uncomfortable times and practice the art of the pause. Don’t go straight to food, sex, exercise, etc. Maybe journal and experience it instead.
- Talk to a professional about what’s burdening you. It’s hard to truly relax/regulate when you have a lot on your plate.
Here are 5 signs you’re becoming more emotionally regulated:
- You’re not as reactive and you tend to take a pause and think more often than not
- You feel your feelings without spiralling
- You’re able to communicate your feelings with others in a calm manner
- You’re resilient and pick yourself up quickly
- You experience the whole range of emotions
- You don’t have an addictive behavior
Lots to throw at you at once, I know, but valuable information nonetheless! Happy healing 🙂
